grandfathered plan

A grandfathered plan refers to health insurance coverage that existed on or before March 23, 2010 and therefore is subject only to certain provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act . Any policy sold in the individual health insurance market after March 23, 2010 will not be grandfathered even if the product sold was offered before that date. New employees can be added to group plans that are grandfathered, and new family members can be added to all grandfathered plans.
